| This is Captain Communication #1 for the Untamed
Virginia Adventure Race. We'd like to take this opportunity to officially
welcome you to the event and we hope your training is going well as
we move into Spring. The race weekend is two months from now, but
we need to share some important information with you at this
point. We'll be staying in touch with you via these Captain
Communications so be sure to look for them periodically in your email inboxes,
and be sure to forward them to your entire team and support crew.
Included in this communication: If you haven't already, please confirm your
registration details are correct as shown on the
Registered Team web page. You may want to get your team biography
updated for the website, it's sure to get some exposure as we'll have Race Live
tracking of the event in progress (leaderboard, live course map, etc). We'll
also have some pre-race prizes for the teams with the funniest or most creative
Team Biography; at the moment, the
Squirrel Whisperer team is leading the voting for funniest bio!
When you registered for the race, you had some options such as joining us for a catered pre-race meal on Friday evening June 8th or purchasing additional race shirts for your support crew. If you'd like to add meal tickets or additional shirts, email info@UntamedVA.com with the details and we'll get you included. The Race Check-In will be at the Boys and Girls Club of Charlottesville Albemarle from 6-8 AM on Saturday June 9th. Check-In will consist of finalizing waivers, distributing race goodie bags and the official race shirt, doing a quick map skills test, and distributing your race maps and instruction booklets. Teams will get their race maps and instructions (including start location) as soon as they finish the check-in; furthermore, in an effort to simplify the morning logistics, we will not be checking gear that morning. You can expect thorough gear checks during the course of the race, however, so be sure to have the mandatory gear. The hotel situation for Friday
night June 8th is that we've blocked off a group of rooms at the Fairfield Inn
(ph: 434-964-9411); use "Adventure Race" as your registration keyword to get
the group rate. All room reservations with this block must be made no later
than May 8th, or the hotel will release the rooms to the public. The location
of this hotel isn't relevant to the race course, it's just a reasonable hotel
that made the room block available to us for the event. In case you were
wondering, your support crew will be very far from Charlottesville on
the night of June 9th and they should plan on camping at the TA or sleeping in
a vehicle instead of returning to the Charlottesville hotel room.
If you need a canoe rental for the race, you can rent from James River Runners (434-286-2338) located South of Charlottesville in Scottsville. Another option is to rent a canoe through Liquid Lessons where, for a flat $100 fee per canoe, they will stage the canoe for you at the start of the paddling sections and transport the canoe for you during the race; this means your support crew doesn't need to pick up or return the canoe, since the outfitter is in charge of moving it for you. To make arrangements to reserve a canoe from Liquid Lessons, call us at 1-877-486-8263 or email us at info@UntamedVA.com. Supplies of canoes from Liquid Lessons are limited. To update everyone on the riverboarding
component of the race, a low supply of boards on the East Coast along with very
low water levels has convinced us to rework this element. Instead of providing
all racers on all teams with a RipBoard riverboard as we originally planned,
we'll be providing one board per team and other teammates can bring
their own RipBoard or they can trek, bike, or paddle the alternate route for
the section. The alternative was for teams, after the lead 15 or so, to
possibly wait in line at the riverboarding section and we don't want any
bottlenecks during the race. Instead of every racer needing to have a set of
fins for this riverboarding section, we can change that requirement and only
require one set of fins per team unless you're bringing your own
RipBoard (in which case you'll need fins for every person on the river). We
have arranged a great deal on fins & booties for riverboaring, and an amazing
deal on RipBoard purchases for racers (like 33% off retail!) if you want to get
your own. More on this soon.
The RipBoard riverboarding clinic is confirmed for June 2nd in Richmond on the James River. This will be conducted by the owner of RipBoard, so you know you'll get a great introduction to this whitewater activity! This is optional, and not a requirement to race the Untamed Virginia Adventure race; the water you'll see in downtown Richmond will be much tougher and technical than what you'll encounter during the actual 2007 race, but RipBoard wanted a chance to showcase their product on the big rapids of downtown Richmond. Just a hint for folks: the Untamed Virginia Adventure Race 2008 edition will include a race finish in Richmond and feature riverboarding through the same sections that this 2007 RipBoard clinic takes place in. How's that for letting the cat out of the bag? The June 2nd clinic is free to racers, but you must register with us to reserve your space by calliing us at 1-877-486-8263 or emailing us at info@UntamedVA.com; we need to know your team name and the racers who will be participating in the clinic. There has been a rope course added
to the Untamed Virginia Adventure Race. This will be a low ropes course that
requires gloves (bike gloves are OK), a helmet (bike helmets are OK), a
climbing harness, and two sewn slings or daisy chains. No skill certification
or specific training is required to complete the rope course, just some
tenacity and balance. The ropes course will be a fun addition to the event, but
racers may opt to skip the ropes and incur a time penalty.
You may want to check out our schedule of information sessions for the month of April, we'll be doing a presentation on racing 24+ hour events and answering questions specific to the Untamed Virginia adventure race:
The next Captain Communication for
the Untamed Virginia Adventure Race will go out in early May and include a more
detailed schedule, some course information, specifics regarding the race maps,
and more information.
Until then, on behalf of Untamed Adventure, may your maps always be dry! Grant Killian www.UntamedVA.com www.UntamedAdventure.com |
We'll be doing some information
sessions in April:
Untamed Adventure is proud to partner with AtmosClear to make the Untamed Virginia Adventure Race completely carbon neutral! This means we've purchased the offsets for all our planning, racing, and even the driving of the support crews to ensure the race is as environmentally responsible as possible. Stayed tuned for more information about this . . . The Charlottesville Boys & Girls Club will have a team in the race. They will be alternating racers with support staff, but they will be hanging tough with the rest of the teams for the full 100+ miles of racing. Be sure cheer them along as you encounter them on the course! Body Revolution of Charlottesville is proud to provide healthy and light pre-race snacks to teams at the race check-in on Saturday morning June 9th. Look for the BodyRev table and remember this local Charlottesville business when it comes time to achieve your fitness goals.
We're excited to announce our Calories for a Cause program where teams can pre-order pizzas that will be waiting for them at one of the night transition areas for the Untamed Virginia race. Hot pizza has saved us during some of the races we've done, and we think it's a great way to raise money for a great cause! Click here to order your Calories for a Cause and get full details. We will have a true adventure racing legend joining our race staff for the Untamed Virginia race. Think Eco-Challenge, and you'll be on the right track. We'll have more to say later . . . |
