The insanity returned to the finish line so I've just gotten a chance to load splits We are only waiting on one more team to come through and I can see them tracking close. We are almost there; we made it! The leaderobard DOES NOT take O-course bonuses, time bonuses, or penalities into account. We'll work up these final calculations with a clear head tomorrow.
However, based on my (unofficial) calculations congratulations go out to Team YeRen/Sycom ASR (#23) for the best showing - they got tons of extra time bonuses and o-course points. Absolutely excellent race.
The winner of the 3/4 coed divison is Calleva (#4). Congratulations, fantastic race!
And Team Hype (#25) had a brilliant race and won the 2 coed division.
Kudos to all teams who came out and raced even just a part of this course. And again, official results will be posted within the next few days. Thanks for following!

Got a question over trail mail regarding post-race food. We are organiznig some snacks (sandwiches, drinks, fruit, etc.) at the race finish, but I don't think we'll have a formal gathering since teams will be pretty spread out. If families/friends are in the area, stop by, grab a snack and help us cheer teams on! Just refer to the live race course CP22 (map feature is easier for driving) for the location; you can't miss us.

It was a long, long night. The heat really hit our racers hard and we had 12 teams drop out of the race. This meant driving all over picking up racers and it really stretched our race logistics to breaking point. For a couple of hours there, it was tough to be in our RD's shoes.
And with this insanity, we saw our few hours of precious allocated sleep dissapear. Oh well, we don't volunteer for the naps, now do we? Good news is that we have 7 teams on the water so the course is progressing nicely later this morning. I'll go put some splits in....

It looks like most if not all of the teams are through CP11/12 but I'm having a hard time getting updates. A lot of fatigued racers have dropped out of the race at this location and it has caused a massive reshifting of personnel with cars that can fit bikes! It's just been a really hot day.
Also, a critical time cut-off has been pushed back one hour at CP 15/16 to make it out onto the first O-course. Teams need to arrive here by 2 am now to stay on the Pro course. More as I know it, but information is moving pretty slowly so you may juuust want to head to bed. :)

Hi AR fans - don't get too worried if a SPOT isn't moving - the cell phone and sat coverage is not the greatest in this area; and in the best case they only update every 20 minutes or so. Also try the leaderboard for updates for your team if you are wondering where they are. I try to get splits up as soon as possible.
Media packet - Grant (our RD) just ran out of time this morning when he had wireless coverage. It's been a pretty hectic day for race staff; so please just bear with us! He should be back in wireless internet territory before 5 pm (cross your fingers) - we are working on it!

We are waiting on 4 or so teams to arrive at CP4 to transition to the riverboarding section. You'll notice a 1 hr time bonus for most teams. This time bonus was given to teams as a reward for participating in our Conservation Project along the paddle leg. Most teams turned in a tire (yes a whole tire!) - one team turned in approxitely 30 bottles or cans for thier time bonus. Bravo racers!
Team #23 YeRen/Sycom ASR is still in the lead and is one of 5 or so teams to clear CP6. I'll get those splits as soon as possible.

Well, since I'm running HQ from a dreary rainy day in Zurich (seriously technology is amazing) it's hard for me to appreciate just how HOT it is in VA today. The volunteers have mentioned it, Grant has, and so have all of our race fans over trail mail. Well, I just got word that one of the bike tires (not a tube!) exploded. This was a bike, in the shade, staged and waiting for teams to finish the paddle leg. Unfortunately, it also looks like the bike belongs to a team in the lead pack and probably the lead team at the moment (waiting on confirmation). Could be from a combination of heat and overinflation; we aren't sure. Not sure how HQ or the team will handle the news.

All the teams are officially on the Untamed VA race course; phew- that was a long morning as far as race logistics go. The SPOT devices take about 20 minutes to re-initialize, so you should shortly see your teams moving toward that first flag (CP3). It's a looong portage.... Bad news is that I'm not getting cell phone reception from the volunteers at CP3 (we are in the middle of nowhere, afterall), so I'm not super hopeful that I can put splits (see Leaderboard) as they arrive.

Teams have arrived at the start location after the 90 minute bus ride, I heard that it was interesting trying to plot points on bus seats. New challenge! Teams that did well in the prologue will go out first (top 15 with one minute in between) after recieving thier SPOT device (for real time tracking). I'll post when I hear that the first team is on the water. Also, a note regarding the time stamp on this website; our server is in California, so you'll need to add 3 hours to be in EST "real time."

Untamed Virginia kicked off Friday with an optional prologue that took teams riverboarding down Richmond’s James River and running through downtown parks searching for orienteering points. The top 30 finishing teams received time bonuses of up to 30 minutes for Saturday’s start of the 30-hour race.

And they are OFF - on a bus that is... This morning all the teams gathered around 7 am to be bused to the start location. This makes finish line logistics much easier - allows for a linear course and for cars to be waiting for racers at the end of the day. They'll have a 90 minute bus ride with race booklets and maps, but the race won't "officially" start for a while. Stay tuned...

The race is filling up and we're excited to welcome some teams returning from the Untamed New England race . . . our Canadian friends from Breathe Magazine will be coming south to check out the Virginia Piedmont. We're also welcoming the Littleton Bike and Fitness team from northen New Hampshire . . . this team finished 3rd overall at the 3-day Untamed New England race earlier this year, so they'll be fun to watch in VA.
Truthfully, at least half the teams are good friends of ours (not even counting the Untamed Adventure team!). Hopefully the other half will become our friends over the course of the race. This event will surely deliver "more adventure than a race" and we're excited to see how teams handle the challenges we've got in store for them . . .

We're getting our online portal together for the 2008 edition of Untamed Virginia. This 30-hour adventure race is going to be a great test of endurance and teamwork.
For those looking for something less intimidating, we're adding a shorter 3-4 hour Untamed Virginia "Dash" that will take place the same Sept 13th weekend. The "Dash" will share facets of the full 30-hour Untamed course, including some orienteering and the race finish line, but you can complete it in 10% of the time -- the "Dash" is a great introductory race and you can rub shoulders with the pros on the full 30-hour course!
