Untamed Virginia Adventure Race Mandatory Gear

Note: this list only applies to the 30-hour course; there is no
mandatory gear for the 4-hour Dash course.

Mandatory Individual Gear (required at all times by all competitors)
Mandatory Individual Bike Gear (required during biking legs)
- Mountain Bike (no road bikes permitted)
- Bike Helmet
- Front mounted white bike light
- Rear mounted red bike light
Mandatory Individual Paddling Gear (required during paddling legs)
- PFD (Coast Guard approved type 3 minimum, non-inflatable)
- 3 Glow sticks (any color)
Mandatory Individual Riverboarding Gear (required during riverboading legs)
- Helmet (bike helmet is permitted)
- PFD
- Riverboard & fins
(no specific brand or model)
- Suggested (but not mandatory): booties and gloves
Mandatory Individual Ropes Course Gear (required at ropes site)
- Nothing; all harnesses etc will be provided at the ropes course.
Mandatory Team Gear (required by each Team at all times)
Mandatory Team Biking Gear (required by each Team during biking legs)
- Bike repair kit (such as patch kit, tire levers, extra tubes)
- Tire pump or CO2 inflator
Mandatory Team Paddling Gear (required by each Team during paddling legs)
- Canoe (17'6" or shorter) and, if a team of 3 or 4 you may
bring one kayak of any style. Canoes may not be of kevlar or graphite
construction.
- Teams must bring their own paddles
- Bailer or bilge pump
- Throw bag (30' or longer)
- Teams must bring a duffel bag or
gear bin to store the team paddling gear. Only one bin or bag is
permitted for each team, so be sure all pfds and paddles fit inside. Further
details will be made available in a Captain Communication prior to the race.
First Aid Kit Minimum Contents
- antibacterial ointment
- 3” ace bandage
- 3 doses of anti-inflammatory (ibuprofen, etc)
- 3 doses of benedryl
- tweezers
- sunscreen

This page contains the mandatory gear for the race; it is not a
complete list of what you should carry (for example, we don't have a
headlamp on the
required gear list, but you will have a tough time at night without it!), but just a starting off
point. Race staff will confirm you have all the mandatory gear as a
minimum safety standard.
Keep in mind that you must be self-sufficient for the duration of the event.
Be prepared with food, water, water-purification, etc. See the
Race Page, specifically the "self-sufficiency" section, for more information.
Outside maps are permitted, but the race provided maps will be sufficient
to complete the course. Altimeters are allowed.
GPS devices are NOT permitted.
